The Cap-Sizun Nature Reserve at Goulien
This site is managed by Bretagne Vivante SEPNB, which stands for
the ‘société pour l'étude et la protection de la nature en
Bretagne’ (similar to the RSPB in the UK).
The Cap-Sizun nature reserve protects an exceptional
area that extends over 40 acres, including moorland, cliffs
and islands.
Hundreds of seabirds come in spring for the mating
season and to make their home here for a few months, and
visitors to the nature reserve can find out about the birds
from the open seas.
The site offers a rich biodiversity thanks to its
heathers and moorland but also the dense ground coverage and
the cliff habitats.
A nature reserve does not try to freeze time or
capture nature under a glass roof, on the contrary - it is a
place of active conservation work, research and
environmental education. The direct protection of this site
allows us to guarantee a secure home for species that are
threatened or fragile.
The Cap-Sizun Nature Reserve is, for example, one of
the last three remaining places in France where the
Guillemot will still mate. Scientific studies and nature
inventories are, for us, like healthchecks telling us about
the wellbeing of our site and allowing us to define and
introduce any necessary measures to improve the protection.
Finally, the team working at the reserve helps to make
members of the public more aware about environmental issues,
by welcoming over 15 000 visitors a year at Goulien, but
also through their ongoing activities throughout the Cap
Sizun area.
It's open all the
