The pond at Poulguidou
Poulgidou pond lies just 3.5 km from the sea and 62m above
sea-level between the districts of Plouhinec and Mahalon and
not far from Plozévet. The pond extends over 15 hectares
including a peat-bog to the south-east.
The botanical richness of this pond is evident in the
abundance of protected plant species, including a particular
orchid that is rapidly fading elsewhere and the drosera
rotundifolia and the drosera intermedia, two
carnivorous plants that capture and feed on insects. In
addition to these, there are other plants and protected
species that are hard to find on a national scale.
On the ornithological front, the pool is equally rich. Most
of the birds are protected and many nest on or near the
site. The majority of these birds have been designated as
threatened species, meaning that fewer than 100 remain. On
the other hand, many birds have successfully increased in
number thanks to the resources here.
Poulguidou pool is one of those rare pools close to the sea
with both a marshland and coastal environment that nurtures
unique flora and fauna.
